Don Luis

My name is Don Luis and I was born in 2005. I am Hanoverian by Dimaggio Rubinstein. Karen Tebar is my rider ; she and her parents: Gerhild and Willy Schetter own me. Dressage is my passion and what I mainly do all day is to live this passion with Karen.
Where does your name come from, Don Luis?
To explain why my name is Don Luis, I must tell you my story : My previous owner, Candido Romero, has a son named «Luis». One must know that this Luis is very tall (1.90m) and when he saw me for the first time when I was two years old, he said that I would never become a good dressage horse because I was too small. To which statement his father replied: « My son, little by little, you will learn that in life greatness does not depend on size. You will realise that this horse is extraordinary because he has a big heart, like you ». For this reason, I give him your name and from now on his name will be Luis like you.
Isn’t it a beautiful story? And as you know, my name needed to begin with the same letter as my father’s. So my name is Don Luis. If you want, I can tell you another secret: over time, when I enter the dressage arena, I try to look taller to show I am tall enough.
Do you prefer to work with a male or female rider? Why?
I have always had female riders and I like it because I can flirt with them. They always pet me when I look at them nicely. It works without fail!
Where do you live?
I live in a small stable with only 10 stalls. Each of us has its own private paddock. I have the largest stall, it is great! The only glitch is that it is closed with railings, because I have already tried to jump over the door twice to go to the paddock. Now people around me have to open the paddock’s door — and every time I receive a little stroke. It is not that bad.
What do you like most about your stable mates?
My mate is Don Avalon — the horse of Karen’s dad. He is 8 and as I am the most experienced, I give him dressage advice. He admires me for my success in competitions. But one must know that I prefer to have people around me, they’re better than horses.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Sometimes I play hide and seek with the girls — Astrid or Karen. When they want to put a bridle or a halter on me, I turn back and leave without them.
What is your favourite colour?
My favourite colour is black like me and like “Black Beauty”. Do you know this amazing movie about a beautiful black horse?
Which dream would you like to come true in your life?
Going to the Olympic Games and I think it would please all the family… My dream would be to be more in the field, at best for the whole day with the people I love. At the moment I only get to spend an hour or 2 a day – they say I grow fat if I stay longer. What a pity!
What is your favourite discipline?
Dressage, and more specifically the passage. People compliment me for it and I love it! I also enjoy trotting through cavaletti. I don’t like jumping that much – from time to time my rider asks me to jump over small obstacles but no higher than 40cm as she knows I find it too difficult.
When do you feel the happiest?
When I tame Karen my rider! It is quite simple. When she enters the stables in the morning I neigh so she drops her bags and she rushes towards the back of the stables to see me! And then it is pure bliss! She gives me apples or bananas, I love it!
What do you dislike most in the world?
What I really dislike is to have to wait and stop in horse shows. I am impatient to go in the arena to dance. I find that Karen takes far too long to get into the saddle. As I have no time to waste – she sometimes has to hurry. At home it is quite different actually, I always stay put. But what I really can’t stand is the bridle’s control after the show! Just imagine for a minute: someone I don’t know at all who tries to put his hands in my mouth! It’s disgusting!
Which natural gift would you like to have?
I’d love to be able to climb stairs. I would be able to spend my evenings on Astrid’s sofa and get even more hugs and strokes.
During your champion career what has been your best memory?
The last day at the European championships in Aachen, the day of the finale for the best 15 horses. All the other horses had already gone back home, I was all on my own in the stables with my close guard. Stephane and Sylvie of the FFE kept me company. It was dead cool!
Which frame of mind are you in at the moment?
Quite happy and relaxed. It is soon lunch time!
Do you have a life motto you would like to share with us?
You can do anything if you put your mind to it!
How can we keep up to date with your news?
On my rider Karen’s website.
